I left feeling similarly to most of the exams I've taken....like it could go either way.  There were quite a few questions that I knew the answers to immediately, some that there were a couple of answers that seemed fitting, and then some questions that I had no idea what the answer was.  So I have my fingers crossed hoping for the best.

I spent alot of time studying the Kaplan book, moderate amount of time with the flash cards and Edward Allen, and then spent a really small amount of time going over the famous Redrover list.  If I have to take this again, I will most certainly spend more time on the Redrover list.....

Just saw your post.  Glad you figured it out...  If anyone else out there is wondering what the "Redrover" list is, it's a list compiled by a user named "Redrover" on August 3rd, 2007.  You should be able to find it if you search by username.

I got my pass letter in the mail today!!!  Woohoo!!!  Another one down, what a relief.  So, once again, I studied Kaplan, the Edward Allen book, flash cards and the Redrover list.

Thanks for all of your help on this one.:)

Thanks!  Sounds like you folks are studying everything that I did and should do great.  (I forgot about Ching...I did glance at it from time to time if I was confused about how something goes together, although if you don't have Ching you can also look things up on the internet).  I didn't have any practice exams other than the one at the end of Kaplan, so that's an extra bonus for you "Going Crazy!":)

Chings Building Construction Illustrated.  I used it more as a reference when I was uncertain about a topic, or wanted to get a better understanding of how systems go together.  It has great illustrations and just helped to solidify concepts in my head.  It was a little pricey (around $100 if I remember correctly), but I also used it for the  Mechanical/Electrical exam, and it looks like there is a little bit of info in there re: structural.  You're local library might even be able to get it for you through inter library loan.  It may be worth checking out to see if they can get it for you.

thanks Reidt!   I just purchased it along with the Visual Dictionary by Ching....figured i'd rather spend the money on the book then the money on a retake of the exam later on.

Great!  I think you'll like it, plus it will likely be a good reference even after we're done w/ our exams.

i'm saving the 2 structural for last and since that is the case, as long as I've passed all the others before then, i'm going to see if i can request to transfer to version 4.0 early so I only have to take one instead..........the structural graphic vignette was easy so, i'd rather answer 125 questions then 160.

study the hell out of A201 for CD's........i posted my exam experience for CD, take a look in that forum.....i took it on April 26th, 2008, so, look around that date.

Good luck!

Thanks for the post but I have a few questions because I am almost studying the same things you did except Allen, and everyone seems to be praising that book but I glanced over Ching.....

Did you read LEED 2.2 or just material from FTP and did you glance over Allen or read cover to cover

I just want to know because I was thinking about getting the Allen book from the library but was overwhelmed by it all....and I still have to read LEED 2.2 although I have read about...

embodied energy

new urbanism ( yesterday)

Life cycle costing

Thanks

GT, I have Allen's book......granted, its the Second Edition, but, it's easy reading.....alot of illustrations.  I had it signed by Allen when he was at Wentworth for one of my classes one day, so, I couldn't justify getting the newest edition for this exam.  I hope I didn't mess up by not getting the newest one (I just spent an arm and leg on other books).  I'd say that I already knew 60-70% of what he talked about, short of code charts and things of the like.

I would also like to know about how much in depth I need to get with LEED.  I'd hate to take the time to read it cover to cover and find out I only need to know certain things.  I can see skimming the whole book in 2-3 days, but, it would take me alot longer then that to actually read it in depth and absorb it more.

Thanks Going Crazy I am doing the same but am trying to relax in this 1.5 week  home stretch...

anyways good Luck to you I just have to buckle down and fo to the library and get this darn book in addition to the other million things I'm studying...

Thanks for the info

Here it was when I saw the Kaplan guide that I thought oooh this is a small volume I can beat this one...oooh boy was I wrong..I think this is more intense than CD,PD, and ME possibly could be...at least those are more focused on specific topics....this one is all over the place and maybe PD as well

when are you planning on taking this beast?

scheduled for Oct. 25th at 3pm......i'm taking the day before off from work to study.  I did that last time for CD and I passed so, "if it ain't broke, dont try to fix it" is the mentality that i'm stickin with.

i'll sleep in late, take my time getting ready and more then likely, review the material quickly before the exam.   Like you said, there is just soooo much information to absorb, that its very overwhelming.  I have stacks and stacks of books in my bedroom just for this one frickin exam and i sometimes draw a blank just before I dont know which one to crack open next without making feel like i'm jumping all over the place.

I have Allen's book, both of Ching's books, MEEB (in the mail to me), Archiflash cards, Ballast, FTP notes (all of them, especially Redrover's), LEED New Construction 2.2, both NCARB's practice exams, Kaplan's practice exam, and both of PPI's practice exams.........that is the library of information that I have to study with.

The thing is, i took NCARB's 4.0 practice exam last night, got a 73% on it (felt pretty good about that), but, there were STILL some questions concerning things that I just have not heard about before and had to take a wild guess on.  Luckily, through process of elimination, i'm at least able to drop 2 answers which leaves me with a 50% chance of getting it right.

Good luck to you on your exam!

Going Crazy, Thanks.  I will check out your post for Construction Docs.   And that's a great idea (requesting to switch to 4.0 early).  I'm saving LF and GS for last too....so that makes alot of sense.  I didn't know they'd let us do that!

GT Trinity, for what it's worth, I know a guy who passed this exam without Allen....so it's not an absolute necessity but a recommendation.  I had a buddy who owned the Allen book, so I was able to borrow it from her.  I glanced through it and read chapters on topics that I didn't feel really comfortable with (I didn't read the entire book).

Regarding LEED topics, there was a chapter on sustainable design in my Kaplan book.  That's pretty much all that I studied regarding LEED.  Basically you just need to know the scoring system and what percentages of compliance needed to be considered Bronze, Platinum, etc.  (I didn't read the whole LEED manual).

Hope this is helpful.  Let us know how it goes!
