Greetings to my fellow candidates still studying for this exam,
This exam was another re-take for me, and needless to say that I’m
in agreement with many on the forum, in saying that the exam was fair....
tho some of the questions still appeared to be worded as if a monkey had written them....lol.
The last 2-3 times that I studied for this exam I took about 6-8 weeks, and still failed,
so this time I only gave myself about 2 weeks, approximating about 100 committed hours in total.
So I won’t get into to much depth in detail, but all I gotta say is that if I did end up passing this exam, it was all in due thanking and appreciation to the info gathered on this great forum specifically from the resources mostly gathered from the forum and FTP site…as I must’ve absorbed about 90-95% of this info before I sat for my exam.
Ok, so here goes the experience….broken down, generally speaking…
So....I started the exam off slow (maybe too slow) as I continuously read thru each of the questions about 2-3 times, before I was able to fully understand what it was that they were asking. Unfortunately, I marked just about every damn question because of the fact that I wasn’t 100% sure that the answer I chose was correct. (In ALL honesty, I probably marked about 85% of all the questions..) What helped me a lot was the strategy of ‘process of elimation’…and I think that this was more helpful than not. I actually utilized the strategy that Flats (forum member) had presented on the PD forum, so here's the shortcut if you're interested....it's explained about 1/4 of the way down the list:
http://www.areforum.org/forums/view_topic.php?id=39766&forum_id=1&highlight=ode+to+pd
So...with all that said, I finished up answering the 1st round of questions (with all questions answered…..) with about 10 min remaining on the countdown clock…which wasn't what I had in mind....but whatevers clever, right?....
So…needless to say that I did the best I could in re-reviewing all the marked questions that I had, but didn’t have nearly enough time to finish reviewing them all...
I won’t give a list of items that ‘relate’ to my exam, but I CAN say that if you review all the ‘referenced items’ that are discussed on the forum, and the FTP site, then you should be in good shape. I say that because I was aware of about 90% of the criteria that was presented to me on this exam…which is a good thing.
The following is a list of general areas of study that I recommend if you happen to be presented with an exam similar to the one I was presented with recently:
- Read up on famous landmarks designed by Frank Lloyd Wright, and other famous architects.
- Understand how STC ratings are used, calc'd.
- Study details regarding solar impact on the Urban Heat island affect
- Study details on how fireplaces are designed
- Study info on different types of soils & foundations, and which types are used for what conditions.
- Understand what types of flooring materials are used in sustainable design
- Understand what the different type of substrates are that are used when installing ceramic tile, and other floor finishes of the like
- Definitely read up on the Leed 2.2 documents from the FTP site (shortcut to these documents are found below)
- Understand the concept of embodied energy (from a sustainability standpoint)
- Study details on landscape lighting
- Read up on historic preservation (shortcut to website below)
- Understand what the difference is between the following agencies: ANSI, ASTM, UL, IBC, EPA, and OSHA
- Understand the characteristics of ALL concrete formwork
- Also, do yourself a favor and study the HELL out of the Visual Dictionary of Architecture by Ching.......
- Read the sections of AHPP that are related to Cost estimating, and contracts
The following is a list of the Materials that I studied, and all were in conjunction with reviewing the info that I found on the forum & FTP site:
1. Fundamentals of Building Construction, by Edward Allen (I skimmed about 95-98% of the entire book, while reviewing the 'recommended info' from the forum)
2. Kaplan 2006/ Building Design Materials and Methods, by Hornbostel & Raber (The only thing I did with this book was skim the sections related to the info from the forum, and then I took all the quizzes along with the practice exam at the end…which was helpful)
3. A Visual Dictionary of Architecture, by Francis Ching (Skimmed about 70% of this book based on references from the RR List)
4. Mechanical & Electrical Equipment for Buildings/ 9th Edition, by Stein & Reynolds (about 30% of the info from this book was helpful for this exam, related to acoustics, STC ratings, & NRC ratings)
5. Architects Handbook of Professional Practice (AHPP)/ 12th Edition (Just did a brief review of the areas related to Cost Estimating, and Project Management)
6. Leed 2.2 documents from the FTP site (which can be found here):
http://www.areforum.org/guest/Materials%20and%20Methods/LEED%202.2%20Reference%20Guide%20-2007/
7. I reviewed the following websites, since they applied to various areas of study per the info I found on the forum, so here they are:
- Info on Different types of Playground Surfaces:
http://www.wisegeek.com/what-are-the-different-types-of-playground-surfaces.htm
- New Urbanism:
http://www.newurbanism.org/
- Different Types of Grout:

- Understanding STC:
http://www.soundproofingcompany.com/index.php?/library/articles/understanding_stc
- Historical Preservation (Most people are already aware of this website, but I thought I’d include it anyway):
http://www.nps.gov/history/hps/tps/standguide/
- Wikipedia :
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Main_Page
- Brick Info:
http://www.diydata.com/general_building/brick_calculator/brick_calculator.php
- Insulation Values:
http://www.***energy.org/procorner/stuff/r-values.htm
- Info on Hollow Core Slab:
http://www.cpci.ca/?sc=education&pn=continuing1
- Info on designing Concrete Plank Beams:
http://www.hansonpc.biz/freedom.aspx?pid=324
- Information on Elevators:
http://books.google.com/books?id=DWsmAAAAMAAJ&pg=PA1670&lpg=PA1670&dq=relative+costs+of+different+elevator+types&source=web&ots=it18-dMj0f&sig=NYYr4MHjZ5o_m_ciuB1HXaNOlnA&hl=en&sa=X&oi=book_result&resnum=5&ct=result#PPA1670,M1
- Info on Cabinetry:
http://thewoodworkingteacher.com/Questions/cabinetdimension.html
Okay, so if I were to guesstimate how I did, I'm only gonna say that I did the best I could with the information I studied......so how's that for positive reinforcement?...HAHAHA....
No, but in all honesty, I think my performance on this re-take was better than my previous re-takes, as I approached the 'test taking' part with a little more confidence than before...
Ok, so that's all I got.....and I hope this post helps out some of you still studying to beat this exam in the ground...
Cheers to sum positive feedback in the mail in the next few weeks...for once huh?...lol.

All I can say:
THANKS!
You don't know how helpful is the list you just posted. I'm struggling through the process of studying now and I have so much resources that I'm using that sometimes (97% of the time) I feel overwhelmed and I think I'm over studying.
But after reading your post, I think I'm on a good track. I never thought about MEEB for this test, but now that you mentioned I'm going to read it, at least for those topics you mentioned.
I'm pretty sure this time you will PASS!!!
I hope you will get your letter soon with the pass and good luck with ME, that's going to be my next exam too. I hope I'll see you in the ME forum! And please let's us know the good news to share the happiness of having one more less to worry about!

Yeah, I didn't think about MEEB either, but after going over various posts on the forum, I decided to do the unthinkable, and use it as another source of study....(never did that in my previous re-takes though.....)
In all honesty, like I said, the test was fair, but after looking up a few answers on what I was unsure about, I did make some bonehead moves.....but oh well....(hopefully not too many bonehead moves...lol)
If I do end up having to re-take this again, I'm sure I'll pass it next time....but only time will tell...
Cheers,

I am literally writing notes from Kaplan everyday... I am only on chapter 8 I feel I am running out of time, because I definitely want to take this sucker in 2 weeks, so I Can do CD then PD before year's end
I am thinking of stopping now and focusing on jut reading about sustainability, I already read bout embodied energy and day lighting...

Sorry I was late in responding--usual chaos here.
Man-o-man....that is another incredible post-test synopsis! Honestly, I think you could be writing these tests.
BD was my first trip to hell and an eye-opener since it can be pretty vast. NCRAP likes to pick out random things you'll never-EVER see in two lifetimes.
The Allen book is the bomber-roo for this test, and the only reason I passed it the first time around. I had to use it for my contractor's license exam.
I had to chuckle when you mentioned breaking out ye ole MEEB--the Tome of Pain (as in pain to read, pain to carry, and good for beating one's self in the head) That was a good idea, though, especially if you plan to take ME afterwards.
My brother, I think you are on a roll. BTW, I'm still considering applying for Cali reciprocity when you pass so we can study for the CSE together. I always need more insanity in my life

Lets hope for a pass in 2 weeks, huh?......lol.......

PS - If you plan on getting licensed in CA, I'd start looking into it now.....because I plan to be ready for my CSE by next summer at the latest........if all goes as planned....

Hey Q,
Did you study from the Ballast book at all? I'm wading through it right now. Is it the most applicable study guide to the test?
Waiting for Kaplan book I ordered to arrive.
Can't wait to hear that you PASSED!!

I didn't touch the Ballast book...just based my studies on Allens book, Kaplan, MEEB, Ching, the posts on this forum, the FTP site, and the internet, as explained in the 1st post above.
If Ballast is all that you have right now, I would read thru it, and check the internet for items that you come across in the Ballast book that mightbe unclear...
In addition....If i were you, I'd continue with researching the internet on topics mentioned on this forum....it'll kill time and be pretty productive while you wait for your Kaplan book, though I don't think that Kaplan explains enough of the info needed to pass this exam...I would def use the Ballast over the Kaplan book.
Again, as I mentioned above, I will let everyone know what I recieve when the news comes in...hopefully tomorrow or this weekend......and I'm keeping the fingers crossed for somemore good news.....
Take care, and happy studying....

I can tell you're anxious......
Thanks for the kudos on the post, now give me somemore mana...(lol....j/k)...
No, in all seriousness, check out all of those websites mentioned above, and I guarantee it will help broaden your knowledge on the exam material.
Good luck in your studies, and I will let the forum know when I get those results in....
Cheers to more upcoming good news for us all,
Q..
PS - Seeing that I'm taking ME in a few hours, this is kind of less strenuous for me, that I have not rec'd anything yet for BDMM, so I can maintain focus.....maybe that's a blessing in disguise...ya think?..lol.

you're so right...
About this mana thing I originally asked how it worked and they said that it is completely screwy b'c I have only been on the forum for a limited time and at first I didn't have any mana then all of a sudden a few weeks ago boom there was so much on mine,...
But yeah after that post you definitely deserve it!
Good luck with ME boy you're flying through these exams I gotta ketch up.....you're right I completely agree, you don't need any distractions!

Q,
I just returned from the test to see your post for the first time and boy would it have helped me if I had seen it earlier ! I probably had the same test you did .
Good luck to you !
In addition to the above references, I highly recommend reading the lighting and acoustics portions of MEEB. Very important if you have not taken ME yet.

Quik, sorry to hear it man....honestly. This one is a killer, no doubt. I'm taking it Saturday (11/1), so, I have all I can do from having a meltdown.
at least we'll have one more chance in 3.1 before we get forced to 4.0 and have to redo some of the BT vignettes over again....which will no doubt, s*ck.
keep moving forward, you will be that much more prepared the next time around. I failed SP twice already, so, I know how you feel.

Quick, I absolutely respect your possitive attitude. To tell you the truth, MM was one of the hardest exam for me too. I cant really say it was hard but there were so many weird questions. I totally undertsand you frustration. But think possitive. you will get through this. At least you passed BT. Best luck to you!!!!

Thanks.
It's gotten to the point for me now that I've kind of grown numb to the feeling of being angry whenever I see a fail.....it's just gotten down to the fact where either I pass or I don't....it's that simple...(for me anyway)...
I will get through it next time I take it.....just gotta focus on what's in front of me right now.....3rd/ 4th re-take of Pre Design baby!......
Cheers to future success,

Hi Quick, I had been waiting to see a mail from you, but then saw this post. You are very courageous. I have never met a person who is so humble and strong. You will do good, just concentrate on the others.
Just keep going, there is light at the end of ever tunnel!

Hi, I have been reading your posts and really want to wish you good luck.
I recently passed PPP in 4.0 (same as PD) and remember using EricB's notes before the test, it was right on and helped me out a lot. Hope it helps you.

Have you found that you have too much information to digest and memorize? When I feel that way, I just focus on one single source and concentrate on really unstanding and memorizing those points, that somehow calms me down and makes things more managable.
Keep up the spirits.
