Default could anyone understand this project from Tom of Bartless

I don't quite understand. But I do post my thoughts on the forum. Anyone want to jump in and talk about it?

those are some sick drawings... Interesting perspective of the pyramid as a stationary mode of transport...
He seems to be attempting to reanalyze old craftsman methodologies as the initial impetus and then transferring that to stone to investigate their conversion to new materials... I guess how shipbuilders would build a stone temple...I'm not sold on the switch to stone though and the first drawing seems to place the stone as a "heart" contained by the wood framework for some reason....unless thats the mast...

The deeper I look into the drawings the more confused I get...I love the hybrid drawings though and their layering...The last drawing reminds me of the stone wall that the ship crashes into in the King Kong remake for some reason...

He's a wonderful artist with good vision. He'll make a great Industrial Designer someday.

In school, the phrase "Not Art" was thrown around a lot.

One of my favorite studios in school was one where we were tasked with creating a metaphor from biology for our design.

Metaphor without function is just another abstract sketch... "Not Architecture."

One way to do buildings like high rise is using metaphor or symbolic meaning. When my firm competed with other international firms like KPF, norman foster for korean project, every team need to use symbolic figure to win as this is required by korean committee. To learn to use this method takes time.

So there is nothing wrong to go extreme in school. It can't just only in architecture if we want to learn metaphor. The nature and culture provides many such examples.

I remembered one of the studio heads in SOM told my friend several years ago: I get inspiration from everything in the nature except the buildings designed by others."

I feel you, man. So I am not the only lost on this kind of stuff. Bartlett and AA students like to observe the nature and do the projects from their relationship to anything related to building. Tom's drawings showed deep observation and study on the wood structure. I guess he want to design a vessel on stone by using wood details? But the series of the drawings didn't explain his solution logically.

For example, what is the final thing he build? A vessel? where is the image? Or the vessel is the one he tried to accomplish but cant finish?

Let me put it another way. If it isn't translated to architecture, it's just a drawing.

Inspiration without application is just warm and fuzzy.
