    Default Ncarb 3.1 lateral forces

I am very confused about questions 2 and 12 of the ncarb 3.1 lateral forces mock exam.

Question 2: I don't think a split level v/s a sloping site poses more configuration discontinuity... I don't think the choices provide enough information to make that assessment. Am i missing something?

Question 12: I don't see how frame i is more damped than frames ii and iii... Actually, i don't think that any of them is damped... Can someone point me in the right direction?

You MUST use process of elimination on questions like this. It is not which one is right it is what three do not fit the criteria.
    Two story residence - normal
with a full basement sloping site could affect where the "base" is but that probably does not create a discontinuity
One-story with partial basement not likely to have a discontinuity
Split level on grade - by definition one side is a two story and the other is a one story. Where does the roof of the one story abut the 2 story space?
What happens to the exterior wall of the two story section where it abuts the one-story section. Either might create a discontinuity.
The house I designed and live in has a one-story master bedroom next to a 2-story section. There is a door to the bedroom in the common wall. During an earhtquake three years ago the door went berserk (highly technical engineering term!) because the door opening caused a discontinuity in the shear wall.

12 damping means that forces are being dissipated by movement of the structure. shear walls and concentric braces do not dissipate forces they resist them. moment frames, EBFs, knee braces and similar that use bending to resist forces deform under seismic forces. The deformation dissipates some the the force reducing the force that must be resisted.

A higher R value means more damping by the system.
    Good luck tomorrow!

you are right! That link is not working.

I googled: NCARB, Study guide 3.1.

That is how I found it the first time.

    Try this link:http://www.ironwarrior.org/ARE/_NCAR...echoice_31.pdf

I just opened the guide from this link.

Thanks, Pollia. I found this link as well as after I sent you an email. I got this link by google search and found the link from someone else who posted in the forum ( I forgot his name).
Many thanks anyway. How was the exam? I am sure you did well. I did not see your post yet! I still have 2 more chapters at Kaplan study guide book and B@R to read...Then, I will go all over Q&A soon...Hopefully, I will absord all materials by early of May.
Good luck for the PASS soon.

    I am testing this Thursday.

Completely unprepared yet, since I am still struggling with concepts and formulas, but I have been studying for more than 2 months now (more seriously during the last month, though), and I think it is time to wrap this thing up.

I'll post once I am done.
